2023/24 Work Groups
Teaching for Mastery Development Work Group
Summary
Secondary schools that want to introduce and embed teaching for mastery can nominate two teachers (Mastery Advocates) to join a Work Group. You will be part of a locally-based group of teachers who meet regularly to develop professional knowledge and expertise, as well as receiving bespoke, in-school support from a Mastery Specialist.

Years 5-8 Continuity Work Group
Summary
Work Groups in this project aim to strengthen the transition from primary to secondary school by focusing on curriculum and pedagogical continuity over Years 5 to 8. Participants will collaborate with colleagues from across KS2 and KS3, working on mathematical tasks together and reflecting on the resulting activity and learning.
What will you learn?
- Your pupils in KS2 and KS3 will demonstrate a positive attitude to maths
- You will make common use of approaches, representations and language across phases
- You will deepen your knowledge and understanding of the curriculum across KS2 and KS3 and the expectations of pupils at the end of each Key Stage
- You and your cross-phase colleagues will collaborate on issues of curriculum and pedagogy as a normal part of your schools’ transition practice

Secondary Subject Leadership Community
Summary
This project is for secondary heads of department/subject leaders. Local Work Groups will follow a cycle of workshops followed by school-based tasks. A vibrant professional learning community will be created through peer-to-peer discussions and expert input. Participants will also create an action plan for their department.

Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics
SKTM Early Career Teachers
Summary
Two maths-specific subject knowledge projects are available to support secondary Early Career Teachers (ECTs) – one is for ECTs who have not yet participated in this project and one is for those who participated in 2022/23. Both projects offer high-quality subject knowledge and pedagogy maths support for ECTs, recognising the requirements of the ECF

SKTM Non-Specialist Teachers Programme
Summary
This project is designed to support non-specialist teachers teaching maths in a secondary school in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, thus enabling them to understand, teach and support students in maths in the classroom.

Summary
This Work Group will be both practical and research driven– focusing on curriculum development. This links well to the new Ofsted Framework. It will look at the approaches used in some Pacific Rim countries, combined with the best of what we already do. It will challenge you to re-think your whole school approach and focus on the importance of consistency and progression through key models for conceptual understanding.

Summary
This is the perfect opportunity to find out how a department that has been teaching for mastery for the last 7 years continues to reflect on and refine its practice.
Observe mastery teaching and a Teacher Research Group while learning about the ups and downs of setting out on a Mastery journey.
