Developing Core Maths Pedagogy

Summary

In a context-heavy qualification, whilst providing opportunities for students to explore unfamiliar context, how do you quickly identify and correct misconceptions and develop their mathematical understanding?”

In 2023/24, the Core Maths Pedagogy Work Group will address this question as an overarching theme.

  • We will be looking good classroom practice to help reveal what students know and address their misconceptions.
  • Engaging activities to help find out what your students know, provide overarching context, and help you build on their current understanding.
  • Efficient and effective strategies for other assessment self-assessment, auto-assessment, teacher marking and longer feedback.

We will use this overarching theme whilst exploring particular topic themes that are a priority for the participants on the Work Group.

Sessions will include examples of lesson study, co-planning, curriculum design and engagement in research.

This work group is fully-funded by the DfE and is free to join. Participants who join these work groups will expect to be released for the equivalent of 3 days over the academic year to allow time to this activity to be impactful.

Developing A Level Pedagogy

Summary

In 2023-24 the overarching theme of our Developing A-level Pedagogy Work Group will be developing effective assessment in the A-level classroom:

  • Good classroom practice for assessing in the moment and addressing student misconceptions.
  • Engaging activities that help reveal what student’s know, and allow you to build on their current understanding.
  • Efficient and effective strategies for other assessment including teacher marking, self-assessment, auto-assessment and longer feedback.

This will aim to help A-level assessment be more useful to students with less workload for teachers. Alongside this overarching theme we will be exploring particular topic themes that are a priority for the participants on the Work Group.

Sessions will include examples of lesson study, co-planning, curriculum design and engagement in research.

Participants’ departments will also benefit through shared good practice, making more confident use of approaches such as bar modelling, multiplicative reasoning, realistic contextualisation or teaching for mastery.

This Work Group is run by London South West Maths Hub.

Dates

Wednesday 2 November 9.30am – 3.oopm

Wednesday 22 March 9.30am – 3.00pm

Plus 3 on-line twighlight sessions to be arranged
